Photo AlbumThe 3rd World Pyro Olympics - China and GermanyMay 4, '08 10:30 AM
for everyone
The skies above the Mall of Asia were awash in flame last Saturday. This was the first time I had witnessed the annual pyromaniacal wet dream.

The view from a good chunk of the P150 area was practically the same as the view from the P1k or higher areas. So while the area for lowly peasants was surprisingly far from packed, the area for VIPs was a ghost town of unused chairs and tables. Somebody's head will roll for that extortion.

Photos numbered 1-37 come from China's little spurt while 38-98 is Germany's ironically more impressive crowd pleaser. I guess the best of China's pyrotechnics were being reserved for the Olympics. Photo #36 was featured on the back page of the May 5 issue of Business Mirror.

awesome set man. we'll be there next sat with the family.

what we're your settings on the camera?
p4ncreas wrote on May 4, edited on May 4
I initially set Auto ISO but found that the camera just couldn't meter the explosions accurately, so I went with all Manual: Aperture f8, Shutter 4 seconds, ISO 100. Lens: 17mm (Which still wasn't wide enough for how close I was), manual focus set to infinity. Next time I might try f11 and 8 seconds. A tripod AND steady hands are a must.

There were many occasions when the sheer amount of explosive light necessitated that I drop the exposure, but they were impossible for me to anticipate. Maybe I can do it when there's musical accompaniment.

Dude, this is awe-inspiring! :D It's a good thing it wasn't crowded, though I still imagine it was difficult to get a good spot to set up the tripod?
1stsanctioned wrote on May 5
I especially like this one, the blue is so vivid :)
p4ncreas wrote on May 5
No difficulty in finding a good spot at all. That's how few people were there. Someone really screwed up marketing this thing.

Hey are you gonna get one of those deals where you pay 300 or 500 consumable pesos so you can dine in a restaurant overlooking the esplanade? I wanna try shooting from there next time.
miggyboi wrote on May 5
I might. We'll see. I'll just text you then, ayt?
p4ncreas wrote on May 5
