for everyone
The normally monochromatic hues of Ayala Avenue were flooded with color last Friday during Makati City's annual Grand Parade - a prelude to their 338th Foundation Day in June. Here's a link to the press release:

http://www.byahilo.com/2008/05/08/makati-city-grand-parade-on-may-9-to-showcase-famous-philippine-festivals/

This showcase of various festivals around the country was billed as "resembling the acclaimed Rio Carnival in Brazil." Though I doubt they even got close to that, as most of the exuberantly ostentatious floats still gave me that hastily-built, haphazard impression (Which is why I won't show you any) and not all the street performers looked like they were really into it.

Nonetheless the best delegates such as Tribu Paghidaet and the Makati Caracol kids did not disappoint.

It's a great pic though, but was the part of her routine?

There are shades of 80s Madonna in that outfit. No she was just adjusting them because they were starting to sag.

-Tamron 17-50mm: Aperture Priority f2.8 or Program mode when I felt I didn't need the shallow DoF.
-Tamron 70-300mm: Shutter Priority 1/500s to prevent blur at long focal lengths.
Auto ISO was set to a minimum of 400 at all times.

The first 50 shots here were in RAW. I discovered this chewed up the 4 Gb card too quickly so I switched to JPEG. Shots from 78 had +1 exposure compensation set in the camera (maybe that was too much sometimes, but I tend to favor a slight overexposure to underexposure) while the exposures of the rest were edited as necessary.

The batteries on the flash died after the Iloilo guys. I should have brought my second set of AAs.

The guys with ultra-wides were literally sticking them centimeters in front of the dancer's faces, or just shoving them blindly into the dancing mass.

On the opposite end of the scale, there was this one guy with two telephoto-equipped bodies. One was a howitzer perched on top of a monopod:

Great pics, but all the event-mongering is sad; we try to showcase "culture" when there really is nothing here to back it up.

Too true. I always have that thought at the back of my head when I cover events like this. I tell myself I'm just there to get a good shot published or at least add to my on-the-job experience.

I'm not supposed to be a product photographer at Business Mirror, unlike my work for the Portal. I couldn't care less whether my images help promote the city or not.

Reuters, AFP, AP, National Geographic - I frequently look to them for inspiration.

NG... I can say our sources for inspiration intersect at that point...

The street must've looked like a total mess afterwards.

The street cleaners have my condolences.

Exactly the same thing Madonna did! :D

Agreed there, dude. Beneath, there is nothing here but dancers and costumes.. Fear no great connection to my culture with these...
